Excellence in Leadership

Excellence in Leadership is a leadership formation ministry that was born, nurtured, and launched out of the Rocky Mountain Synod. As of February 1, 2026, we are our own nonprofit organization. We celebrate the past, present, and future relationship with the Rocky Mountain Synod and the people, congregations, and organizations in it! Excellence in Leadership offers several opportunities for individuals and groups to encourage, equip, and become healthy leaders for the sake of ministries and for the sake of the world. We offer topical workshops, ethics and boundaries training, council retreats, strategic planning guidance, courses and more to help people become stronger and more grounded in the work that they do, both in the congregation and in daily life. Our ministry is intentionally designed for clergy and lay people to engage together. So, all are welcome to participate – individuals and groups, people of all ages, formal leaders and future leaders. This ministry is intended for YOU. We seek to meet the needs that are currently present in your contexts and are happy to have a conversation with you about how we can accompany and support you. At our table you will find more information about each of these opportunities, along with samples of our curriculum, books that we use, and some swag to remember us by! Come check us out!

Global Church Network

Walking and working together, the Global Church Network seeks to accompany our companions. The ELCA lives out accompaniment in relationship with global companions, striving to share God's love and participate in God's mission together:

  • Mutually: All of us have gifts to support God’s mission. There is no mission to, only mission with and among.
  • Inclusively: We seek to build relationships across boundaries that exclude and divide.
  • Vulnerably: Just as Jesus became vulnerable to us, we open ourselves to others.
  • Empowering: We seek to identify and correct imbalances of power, which may mean recognizing and letting go of our own.
  • Sustainably: To ensure local ministries last for a long time, we seek to embed mission in ongoing relationships and communities.

The Rocky Mountain Synod Global Church Network (RMSGCN) serves as an umbrella organization for the many ministries that span both our synod and our planet.

  • Border and Immigration Ministries: Partnering with our border congregations to offer a bi-annual border immersion experience for anyone who is interested. We also serve as the connection for Border Servant Corps, the Immigrant Accompaniment Network, AMMPARO (the ELCA's strategy for Accompanying Migrants with Protection, Advocacy, Representation and Opportunities),
  • Companion Synod: We strive to stay informed of the concerns of our Companion Synods in Madagascar as we accompany them.
  • SUMUD: (ELCA strategy for Embracing Justice, Peace and Nonviolence.  SUMUD is the Arabic word for "steadfastness")
  • YAGM: (ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission) stay connected with the YAGMs from our Synod and to encourage young adults to serve in this capacity for one year.

Each of these groups are blessed with talented and passionate people who do the amazing work of connecting this Synod with the world and in accompanying our companions in doing the work that Jesus calls all of us to do.

RMS ELCA World Hunger Network

Physical hunger is the manifestation of greater issues we all want to get to the root of! People also hunger for security, for justice, for a relationship with God and one another. Going strong for 51+ years, ELCA World Hunger works tirelessly to alleviate hungers in communities worldwide. Combining immediate relief efforts with sustainable development, we work to break the cycle of hunger and build healthier futures. Lutheran Disaster Response puts immediate and long-term boots on the ground when major disasters knock down communities. AMMPARO suppports immigrants and refugees, actively accompanying them on whatever stage of their journey to a better life they are in. Creation Cares focuses on environmental issues. Churches throughout our synod are actively working on these issues right now. The goal of our Hunger team is to coordinate our efforts, brainstorm new ideas, support your church's projects, and help you obtain long-term and Daily Bread grants. We are stronger together when we share our successes and challenges. Come over and join the RMS Rallyhood! Pick up some interesting swag, join in on some good conversation & music, and for God's sake, let's help feed the fire in all of us!

Urban Servant Corps: A place to belong. A welcoming and affirming community. An opportunity to serve. At USC, we believe that people need people -- and that it is in community, we are able to live more faithful, simple lives that are in service to one another. Our full-time volunteers live in an intentional community house in downtown Denver with others who are committed to social justice, racial justice, and accompanying vulnerable populations. Urban Servant Corps is currently hosting full-time, young-adult volunteers for the 2025-2026 year of service. Throughout this year, the USC Board of Directors and staff have been in faithful discernment to identify a "Radical Restart" that will be impactful to the community and sustainable for the organization. We are eager to share these updates with you at the Assembly!

Located in Dubuque, Iowa and serving students and synods across the entire United States, Wartburg is delighted to have a strong relationship with the Rocky Mountain Synod. With residential, collaborative, and distance options for learning, the Reconciling in Christ Wartburg community is vibrant, engaged, and always learning. Deacon Kellie Lisi is a rostered leader in the Rocky Mountain Synod and Wartburg's Vice President for Leadership Formation. Fun fact: her son, Nolan, was baptized here at Bethany Lutheran Church in 2017 while she and her family were members here, (and her husband Jason Davis served as Bethany's Senior High Youth Director!).
