225 Years of Ministry

A Legacy of Hope at Oaks Indian Mission

In 1801, long before Oklahoma became a state, Oaks Indian Mission was founded with a bold and compassionate vision: to care for children and families in need. What began as a small frontier ministry has grown into a lasting legacy of service that now spans 225 years. In its earliest days, The Oaks provided shelter, education, and spiritual care to Native children during a time of great uncertainty and transition. Resources were limited, the landscape was rugged, and the work was challenging — yet the mission endured, grounded in faith and a deep commitment to children’s well-being. From the very beginning, Oaks stood as a place of refuge, stability, and hope. As the nation and the surrounding communities changed, Oaks changed with them.

Through the 19th and 20th centuries, the mission adapted its programs to meet emerging needs, expanding its focus to support not only children, but families as a whole. Residential care, counseling, education, and family-centered services became cornerstones of the ministry, helping generations of children grow in safety and dignity. Now, in 2026, Oaks Indian Mission continues that same mission — responding to today’s challenges with compassion and care. While the world looks very different than it did in 1801, the heart of Oaks remains the same: helping children and families heal, grow, and thrive. This 225-year milestone is more than a celebration of longevity. It is a testament to lives changed, families strengthened, and a community of supporters who have carried the mission forward across centuries. As we honor the past, we remain committed to the future — continuing the work of caring for children and families with faith, hope, and love.
